We left Olympia Washington under sunny skies and light airs and headed north under power toward the backdrop of the snow capped Olympics, past Boston Harbor and up Case Inlet toward Allyn. With no particular destination in mind, the goal was to burn a few more engine hours to get closer to the 40-50 hours recommended before the 50-hour new engine break-in service. We put about 5 hours on the new Yanmar 4JH57 diesel engine before turning south in the shoaling waters around Allyn and anchored for the night in the bight between Reach Island and the mainland north of Fair Harbor marina. Our first anchor deployment went flawlessly and our trip was officially underway.
Although happy with the engine performance, Phil was concerned that he was not able to get the water maker to function properly. The water maker is essentially a very high pressure pump connected to a very fine filter. The Katadyn 160E water maker was not pumping sea water through the water maker membrane filter. The water maker membrane is a very fine filter that allows water molecules to pass through, but blocks the flow of salt, viruses, bacteria, or other contaminates. The resulting water is salt and contaminate free and perfect for drinking. Having a working water maker is not essential, but when it works, it allows us to use water much more freely. We can use as much water as we like when cooking and cleaning. We can take longer and more frequent showers. This makes life on board much more convenient.
