Another sunny day in the south sound seemed like a good omen. We hoisted the anchor - lots of south sound muck gave the anchor washdown pump a workout - and motored south in Case Inlet, rounded Devils Head, and north into adjoining Carr Inlet, putting another 4-5 hours on the engine. Mayo Bay by Penrose Point Park was practically deserted even on this pre-summer weekend, so we had our pick of anchoring locations.
Mary wanted to go ashore and see what might be happening with the restoration of Lake Bay Marina, so we launched the dinghy and rowed into placid, pastoral Lake Bay. We went ashore in the Washington state park and hiked the trail overlooking Lake Bay. We got good views of Barlavento at anchor below us.
The Lake Bay Marina building and pier seem to be in good physical condition, but there is no sign that they are currently in use. Mary rowed the dinghy to the end of the bay where the creek enters the bay. There are a number of quaint houses surrounding the bay. We rowed past three derelict fishing boats pulled up on the bank of the bay that are in varying states of decay.
On our return, Phil tackled the water maker once again, but with no success. The water maker contains rubber O-rings and seals. The Katadyn owner's manual says that these O-rings and seals need to be replaced after every 500 hours of use to keep the water maker functioning. We doubt that the water maker has been used for 500 hours, but it has been sitting for nine years since it last made water during Phil's trip to Mexico in 2014. It has been "flushed" every six months to keep the membrane in good condition, but it has not been used to make water. We suspect that the seals may be getting tired. Unfortunately, Katadyn stopped selling the Katadyn 160E water maker in 2010, and it is no longer possible to buy the replacement seals kit for the water maker. That is a shame. The Katadyn 160E was popular with cruisers because of its simplicity and reliability. Phil spent hours searching the internet in hopes of finding a replacement seals kit for the water maker. A few web sites still listed the replacement seals kit for the Katadyn 160E, but none actually had the kit in stock and Katadyn no longer supplies it. Without such a kit, it is not clear if the water maker can be made to work again.
