Friday November 29 2013: Caleta Partida on Espirito Santo Island, Baja California del Sur

I listened to the Picante, Amigo, and Sonrisa nets in the morning. They are forecasting light winds for today and strong northers on Saturday and Sunday. The day was sunny with a fair amount of clouds.

I had planned to stay at Caleta Partida for three more days to wait out the Norther, but decided at the last minute to go north to San Evaristo. I would like to see more of the northern part of the Sea of Cortez and being in San Evaristo positions me better to do that.

I departed Caleta Partida for San Evaristo at 8:30 AM. Initially I was able to motor sail with the staysail and genoa. The wind was close on the starboard side and I was just able to care the sails. In the lulls the wind would back and the sails would luff slightly. In the puff, they helped the boat speed up to 7.2 or 7.3 knots. The seas were smooth until about 11:00 when the wind and waves started to build. In the early afternoon the winds was blowing 25 knots from the north and the seas were 2 to 2.5 feet. I dowsed the sails and motored at 2200 RPM almost directly into the wind and waves. The boat speed was between 4 and 5 knots but it sometimes dropped into the three knot range after the boat hit large wind waves.

I arrived at San Evaristo at 14:15.

There is one other cruising boat in the anchorage “Victoria”.
