I departed San Evaristo at 6:15 AM with the objective of reaching Agua Verde. I was so busy getting underway this morning that I did not listen to the Sonrisa net weather at 7:30 AM. Instead, I based my departure on the GRIB files I downloaded via Sailmail. The wind predictions in the GRIBs were for 5 to 10 knots winds all day.
The wind was initially light, the seas were moderate, and I had a speed of slightly over 6 knots which is good. When I reached Timbabiche (Bahia San Carlos) at about 10:30 AM the wind suddenly rose to 20 knots with gusts to 25 and the wind waves built quickly. My speed dropped to 4 to 5 knots and the ride was very bumpy. I decided to anchor at Puerto Los Gatos, which is just north of Timbabiche. I arrived at Puerto Los Gatos and was anchored by 11:30 AM. The anchorage is very pretty but a little rolly.
I inflated the dinghy and rowed to shore to hike. I spent about 2 or 3 hours exploring the shoreline and hiking to the top of the hill overlooking the north side of the anchorage. I took two or three dozen pictures with the iPad.
As I was hiking, another boat pulled into the anchorage. Later still a fisherman in a panga entered the anchorage. I observed him from shore stopping at the other anchored boat. When I returned to my dinghy, which was parked on the beach, he approached me and introduced himself saying his name was Manual. He was born in Loreto and has worked as a fisherman for the past thirty years. He lives in Timbabiche with his wife and five children. He told me that his wife needed medical help and that he needed money to obtain it. I am not sure if the story is true, but I invited him back to the boat and talked with him while I cleaned the dinghy. In the end I gave him a cold Diet Coke and 500 pesos which is about $40.00. He may have made a fool of me but he probably needs the money more than I do.
