Monday December 09 2013: Santispac, Bahia Conception, Baja California del Sur

I awoke to completely cloud covered skies. The wind is blowing at 10 to 12 knots from the west northwest. The cabin temperature is 68 which feels cool.

I listened to the Sonrisa net at 7:30 AM in hopes of getting a weather update from Geary who lives in El Burro Cove here in Bahia Conception. This is the first time he did not make an appearance on the Sonrisa Net. I also listened on the VHF radio afterward where he normally also gives a weather update, but he did not show up there either. Fortunately I did catch a little weather information on the earlier Amigo net which started at 7:00 AM. They forecast 30 knots or more of wind for the northern Sea of Cortez which extends to just north of here. It is predicted to last until at least Wednesday. From the appearance of the sky, it sure appears that some bad weather is on the way.

There are four other boats in my immediate vicinity. I mentioned “Aeoli” from Seattle with Matt and Raquel aboard yesterday. The other three boats are “Euphoria” from Edmonton, Alberta; “La Buena Vida” from Red Deer, Alberta; and “Passing Wind”. It is too windy to talk with any of them. We are all hunkered down in our boat waiting for the Norther to end.

The wind blew all day and evening. Normally it was in the mid-teens but it got up to 33 knots periodically. The anchorage is well protected from waves so the boat sat comfortably.

I spent most of the day reading the “House of Morgan” by Ron Chernow. I read the sections covering the Great Depression and the Second World War. I am really enjoying the Kindle Paper White for reading. It allows me to keep lots of book in very little space. Space is always at a premium on a sailboat and books can take a lot of space. Now, I only carry the essential cruising guides, reference books, and repair manuals in printed form. I have most of the equipment user manuals in PDF form on the computer. This saves lots of space and weight as well.

I prepared chicken soup in the afternoon. I made enough to last two or three days. I am not much of a cook, but it sure tasted good.
