We left Cabrillo Isle Marina at 2:00 AM on Monday November 11th with John Neville and Carlos Cadiente on board. We departed so early to ensure we arrived at Ensenada while it was light. On the way out of San Diego harbor John noticed that the sailboat image on the Raymarine chart plotter was pointing in the wrong direction by almost 90 degrees. When we tried the autopilot the course heading was wrong by about the same amount. I suggested that we recalibrate the autopilot by following the Raymarine autopilot commissioning instructions. This corrected the problem. It them dawned on me that I had updated the software on all of the Raymarine instruments in San Diego and this probably discarded the original autopilot commissioning settings.
We powered most of the way to Ensenada because the wind was light and we wanted to make Ensenada before dark. We arrived in Ensenada at about1:45 in the afternoon. We first went by Ensenada Cruiseport Village Marina but could not raise the marina on the radio. We then went to Baja Naval Shipyard and Marina. They answered the radio and had a slip for us. We were fortunate to end up at Baja Naval because Eraldo (sp) is extremely helpful. They prepared all of the paperwork to both clear into Mexico and to check out for Cabo San Lucas. The facility is very well maintained. The only issue is that there is a surge in Ensenada Harbor. We were told that the problem arose when they extended the south breakwater to accommodate new construction south of the harbor. This causes waves to hit the south breakwater and to be reflected back into the harbor. The surge was a little annoying but was tolerable. Apparently there are plans to extend the north breakwater to resolve the problem but the only question is timing. They hope to do the work in the coming year.
