Sunday April 13 2014: Isla Isabella to Chacala, Nayarit

Mary Campbell and I departed Isla Isabella for Chacala at about 6:55 AM. The anchor appeared to be fouled when we first attempted to raise it. After a few minutes we tried again and were able to raise it normally on the second attempt. The chain may have been wrapped around a rock. The water was about 22 feet deep and we could see some rocks on the bottom.

After starting the water maker and letting it run a few minutes I found water on the floor of the head. I had no idea where it was coming from. I started mopping it up and was having trouble keeping up with it. It was coming in at a fairly steady pace. I turned off the water maker and wiped and dried the head floor. I restarted the water maker and the puddle quickly appeared and it was clear the water was coming from the under the forward lower corner of the head cabinet but I could not see where the water was coming from. I turned off the water maker again and dried the floor a second time. I took everything out of the head cabinet so I could look for the leak inside the cabinet. I suspected that the leak might be coming from the water maker discharge line, but it appeared to be dry to the touch. I started the water maker again and it was clear the discharge line was fine. The water seemed to be coming from the hamper in the head where the water maker membrane is located. I emptied out the hamper and discovered that the fresh water discharge line had come disconnected from the membrane. The water was draining down to the foot of the hamper and then down to the left into the adjoining head cabinet and from there onto the head floor. It was a relief to find the problem and it was easy to fix. After giving the repair some time to ensure the problem was fixed, I restored everything to the hamper and head cabinets.

We arrived at Chacala and were anchored by 16:00. There were two other boats in the anchorage: “Dos Leos” and a West Sail 32. The beach was full of visitors enjoying the place. It may be because it is the beginning of Holy Week here in Mexico.
