Sunday May 28: Sidney BC to Nanaimo BC

Updated: May 30, 2023

We departed Sidney BC at 9:15 AM bound for Nanaimo BC. The conditions were again ideal. Temperatures were in the high sixties and the sun was shining. We timed our departure to arrive at Dodd Narrows when the current was not too strong. When we arrived at Dodd Narrows, the current was running at about 2 knots against us, but the engine was easily able to overcome that.

We arrived at the Nanaimo Yacht Club at 4:55 PM just before the yacht club office closed. We obtained a key card to gain access to the yacht club bathrooms and showers from Rusty who mans the yacht club office.

Mary insisted that I try a Nanaimo Bar. They are a famous treat that originated here in Nanaimo. We walked about two miles to Nanaimo's downtown looking for a place selling Nanaimo Bars. We tried several restaurants without success. Most of the spots selling them were closed for the day. Several people recommended Red's Bakery, but it was closed.

Mary wanted to pick up a little produce, so we stopped at Thrifty Foods. We were able to find celery, broccoli, eggs, and Nanaimo Bars. The walk back from Thrifty Foods was pleasant. Nanaimo has a shaded walking path all along the water front. It was filled with people enjoying the good weather and views.

We plan to depart for Comox BC tomorrow.

Hi Phil! I was very happy to find out you've been updating your blog! It's really nice you read about your adventures, I hope you'll keep it going. Following your route, I was shocked to find out that I was cycling a few hundred meters from you on Sunday morning, right before you left Sidney . Also, how were those Nanaimo Bars? -Gil
