We departed Green Island Anchorage at about 10:00 AM bound for Millbrook Cove. We made good time with a favorable tidal current behind us.
As a left the anchorage, we saw a humpback whale feeding. He was skirting the edge of the island in his quest for food.
Mary was monitoring the Race To Alaska. The winner, team "We Brake for Whales", reached the finish line in Ketchikan Alaska in the early morning. Several of the boats in the race were delayed due to boat structural failures, like broken rudders or damaged bulkheads. The conditions this year were harsh. The contestants were forced to "go to weather" against strong wind and waves for 400 miles. This tested the race boats, especially the catamarans and trimarans. Catamarans and trimarans are fast, in part, because they are lightly built. It is difficult to build a boat that is both light and strong. When asked about the number of boats having problems, one trimaran expert speculated that it was the result of overloading the boats with crew and provisions and then pushing the boats hard.
By noon, we began to feel the ocean swell resulting from the strong North West winds that had blown on the outside yesterday. These were the same winds that were hammering the Race To Alaska. The swells were hitting us broadside on the starboard beam (that is directly on the right side of the boat). We were not in any danger, but it made for a rollie and uncomfortable ride. During the final hour, we were able to change direction to put the swell more directly behind us. Now, instead of rolling the boat, the swell propelled the boat as we surfed down the swells.
We arrived at Millbrook Cove anchorage at about 2:30. The anchorage was a bit windy but we were sheltered from the swell.
We enjoyed grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner. We used the bread we had baked two days ago.
