Tuesday, May 23: Shilshole Marina

Updated: May 25, 2023

We awoke at Shilshole Marina today to better weather. The sun was shining and the air was a little warmer.

We found two large Sea Lions lounging on the adjacent dock finger about 30 feet from our slip. When we first reached the marina last Sunday and entered our guest slip on dock H, we saw about a dozen Sea Lions occupying the end of adjacent dock I. Apparently the Sea Lions have been making themselves at home here in the marina for the past two weeks. They can be quite loud and they can be aggressive, if disturbed. A marina employee hustled our two visitor back into the water, but they return as soon as he departed. They spent the entire day sleeping on the adjacent dock finger.

Phil spent the morning investigating how to connect the Fireboy engine room fire extinguisher to the new Yanmar 4JH57 engine. I called Fireboy and learned that they could help Kevin at Gallery Marine get the system working. That will ensure that the Fireboy system will shut down the diesel engine if the Fireboy extinguisher in the engine room goes off. I called Irvin at Gallery Marine and gave him the name of the support technician I talked with at Fireboy. The support technician was able to confirm that we could make the Fireboy system work by adding an electronic relay. Gallery Marine has order the needed relay and they hope to install it tomorrow afternoon. That should let us to get back underway.

Phil returned the rental car he used yesterday to drive to downtown Seattle and Everett for boat supplies. It was a pleasant one hour walk back from the Enterprise Rent-A-Car office to the marina. I enjoyed walking through some picturesque Seattle neighbors and then through the wooded trail down the steep bank between those neighborhoods and Shilshole Marina.

Mary spent the day sketching and reading the book "Five Days at Memorial". The book contains a harrowing account of how the Memorial hospital staff in New Orleans suffered through the flooding after Hurricane Katrina.
