Wednesday December 11 2013: Santispac, Bahia Conception, Baja California del Sur

I awoke to calm winds and cloudy skies. The cabin temperature is 66 which is about the same as yesterday. It is a relief to have the winds die down because it will allow me to leave the boat and go ashore.

I listened to both the Amigo and Sonrisa nets this morning to obtain a weather update. It sounds like the winds will be moderate from today through Friday, but another Norther may show up this weekend and last through Monday.

I got mail from John Neville. John crewed on Barlavento helping bring the boat from San Francisco to La Paz. He was great crew and I miss him. It was wonderful to hear that his wife Gabby’s volleyball team at Cabrillo College won the CCCAA California state volleyball championship. They are the first Northern California team to win the championship. They went undefeated for the year with a record of 31-0.

Matt and Rachel from “Aeoli” knocked on the hull at about 10:00 AM to say hi. I invited them aboard to show them the boat. We talked for about an hour. They were going for a walk ashore and invited me to join them. They waited while I got cleaned up, and then we rowed ashore in their dinghy. They were anxious to take a walk after being cooped up on their boat for two days waiting for the Norther to subside.

We walked south down the main highway about 2 miles to Play El Burro. There is a restaurant called “Bertha’s” there where they serve excellent chili rellenos. We stopped there for lunch. After lunch, we crossed the highway and hiked up the hill. Along the hiking trail there are dozens of petroglyphs. There are also iron rich volcanic rocks that ring like a bell when struck with a stone. The view from the top of the ridge was spectacular. After taking pictures, we walked back to Santispac where the boats are anchored arriving just before sunset. It was a wonderful day.

This evening I hope to continue studying for the Technician Class Ham license.
