Wednesday December 18 2013: Honeymoon Cove on Isla Danzante, Baja California del Sur

I awoke at 6:30 and listened to the Amigo and Sonrisa SSB nets. I was able to hear them more clearly today than yesterday.

Went I went out into the cockpit, Kirk on “Kamala” yelled over to let me know that the bay was full of rays. They were jumping out of the water and spinning cartwheels in the air. It was amazing to watch.

The morning was absolutely stunning. Honeymoon Cove was beautiful. Probably the most beautiful location of any I have been to in Mexico. The entire Baja Peninsula is unusually green because they have had much heavier rain than normal. The hills are covered in greenery, there are flowers in bloom everywhere, and there are bees and butterflies in abundance. I have been extremely fortunate this entire cruise. The weather in Alaska this summer was the best they have had in years, and now the Baja is greener than it has been in many, many years.

Kirk and Mary paddled their standup paddle boards over to take a look at my boat. Kirk is looking for a replacement dinghy because the bottom of his existing dinghy has failed. He was interested in my folding transom Achilles dinghy, so I provided him with the model number, dimensions, and specifications for it.

After they departed, I rowed the dinghy ashore and took a hike. The island is part of the national park system of Mexico. The government has created hiking trails and installed signs labeling many of the native plants. The edges of the trails are marked with loosely piled rock borders. I was able to traverse most of the trails in an hour or so. There were lots of opportunities to take pictures, including some of “Barlavento” at anchor in Honeymoon Cove.

I departed Honeymoon Cove at 12:00 PM to make my way to Bahia Agua Verde 20 miles to the south. The skies were a beautiful shade of blue and the mountain views were breathtaking. The mountains were so green that it reminded me of the Marquesas in the South Pacific.

I reached Bahia Agua Verde at 4:00 PM and had the anchor down shortly thereafter. About 30 minutes after I arrived, the sailboat “Aldebaran” arrived and anchored near me. Rob and Lynne Britton and their longtime friend David are aboard the boat. I had meet them briefly this morning where they were anchored not far from me in Honeymoon Cove. They departed Honeymoon Cover for Bahia Agua Verde shortly after I did. After they anchored here, they invited me over to visit and see their boat.

Rob and Lynne first brought their boat to Mexico in the Baja HaHa in 2011. They used the trip as a shakedown cruise to figure out what changes they wanted to make to the boat before departing for a longer term cruise. In June of 2102 they took the boat back to San Diego and had a lot of work done to improve the boat. They returned to Mexico during this year’s Baja HaHa. They have been cruising the Baja Peninsula since arriving on the Baja HaHa. After the first of the year they plan to continue to the Mexican mainland.

It is my father’s birthday today. He died almost 20 years ago, but I still miss him.
